How can a psychologist help?

A psychologist has specialized training in theory, assessment and interventions that have been shown to improve various aspects of our lives. Therapy with a psychologist typically involves talking through and processing those areas of our lives that we find difficult or challenging. Using specific strategies along with this process is what leads to improvements in mood, stress management, relationships, etc. People learn healthier ways to cope with the stressors in their life.

Often times people receive guidance and support from family and friends. At times people also find it helpful to think through their problems with someone who is objective and can offer suggestions based on their special skills, training and expertise.

What will happen?

During the first meetings, the psychologist will review some basic information about what happens in sessions. At first, we talk about the concerns that brought you to therapy, some relevant background information, and some agreed upon goals.

How long will therapy last?

For some, therapy is brief, lasting 6-12 sessions. For others, therapy lasts as long as is needed to address some of the struggles that have built up, often over a period of years. People generally come for therapy on a weekly basis, while some meet less frequently.
